Sunday 17th February -
Senior League
Cup
Santos 0
Milburn 2
(HT 0-1)
When the Gaffer has to go in
goal, something's wrong
I wanted to win this
match and put a strong side out, this was again not possible due to players
not turning up and late comers.
Jon Campbell and Jacob Nanu
turned up 30 minutes after the rest of the squad, Stuart Dawes and George Gillam
never even bothered but we battled it out and got a result anyway. I put Wez
Clark up front with Jimmy Stutter and I donned the gloves for the first time
this season.
We started ok and looked
comfortable from the off, I had one early save to make but other than that had
little else to do. We seemed to be trying to walk the ball into the net and
frustration set in when our right hand side failed to release the ball. Anything
that came our way was dealt with very coolly by Sam Tyler and Dean Townsend also
made a good start. Our patients were rewarded when a through ball eluded the
Santos keeper and Jimmy Stutter chipped calmly over his head, 1-0 Milburn.
Shortly after Townsend landed awkwardly on his shoulder and forced me into two
half time changes.
At the break I let mine and
the strikers feelings known to those who seemed to want to hog the ball and in
all honesty if Deano had been able to start the second half they both would have
been watching from the sideline. I took Deano off along with Ashzarda then
pushed Curtis forward into central midfield and pulled Wez back to centre half.
Campbell came on up front, Chamberlain dropped to left back Lee switched to the
left and Nanu played on the right.
We looked more composed and
Curtis and Charley started to dominate the game, again I had little to do.
Stutter then got our second and his twenty-fifth of the season with a drilled
shot that left the keeper no chance at all, the game was dead and buried.
It ended there and a
satisfying result with the players we had available.
All in all we go into the
semis with some good players to come back, well played today everyone.

Sunday 10th February -
Senior League
Cup
Green Phoenix Eagles 0
Milburn 2
(HT 0-0)
A tough win in
the
Cup
As I stated before this
side are no mugs, they play decent football and looked well organised. My
only criticism is their timekeeping and as I like to get my side at the
ground a good hour before kick off our opponents only managed to turn up at
quarter to eleven then had to get changed and put the nets up, to be honest
they might as well not of bothered putting the nets up as they looked like
they had been hand woven by Stevie Wonder.
We started slowly and looked
a bit shaky but I’m glad to see that 60% of our team are now listening and doing
what is asked. Leading up to the break we looked sluggish and unfocused, our
players were getting drawn into slanging matches with our opponents and even
stooped as low as whinging at the ref. These are things my sides do not do and
as for verbally attacking each other these antics will not be tolerated by ANY
PLAYER in my group. We went in at half time looking shocked at why the score was
0-0, well its time for a reality check boys and sometimes you need to pull
together as a unit and work for a result. The second half started better
although we seemed to be getting out muscled in the middle of the park and to be
fair I don’t like to name names but Daniel and George seemed to be struggling
for fitness although in fairness they are still quality players even when they
are not 100%. The earlier exchange of words affected Jon up top with Sam looking
like he was looking for the bar in Walkabout, Stuart let the opposition rattle
him while Kurt was playing a game of his own (as I said before there are no
personal battles, its all about the group). Ahmad made way for Nick and we
started to pressure Green phoenix with some good passing football, and our
breakthrough came when a neat Stutter back heel found the advancing Warren
Chamberlain who coolly slotted home with about fifteen to go. Our second came
shortly after when Stutter drilled home from about eight yards out, the game was
dead and buried. It finished at 2-0 but I can assure you we had to battle hard
to grind this result out.
All in all I think the game
changed when our opponents withdrew what I considered to be our main threat when
they went forward, he played just behind the front two and caused us a headache
with our midfield and defence wondering who should mark him. I put Nick on as
fresh legs knowing he would get amongst it and cause problems, we need to focus
on the football and get back on track as we are a good young side.

Sunday 3rd February -
Senior League
Cup
Milburn 1 Surrey Cricketers 1
(HT 1-0)
Another Draw
in the Senior League
Cup
Today for us was a non
event, a chance to look at some new players and have some pressure free fun.
We played an under par ten man Surrey Cricketers side and still managed to
make hard work of it just holding onto a draw.
Our top scorer Jimmy Stutter
went in goal with club captain Wez Clark still injured and we put Stuart Dawes
in the heart of our back four as George Potter let us down AGAIN.
Ahmad Ashzarda continued his
run in the side with a gritty performance next to the ever impressive George
Gillam while our wide defenders and midfielders started in their correct
positions for the first time in what seems ages.
We took the lead with a
typically cool Daniel Lee finish, we played some really good football in stages
but seemed to lose our way at other times. Both teams shared some good natured
banter with my old mate Billy Rivers leading the line, he runs faster now than
he did fifteen years ago and if intimidating referees was an Olympic event Bill
would be representing England I can assure you of that.
Billy Rivers Jr scored an
excellent free kick in the second half to level things up and the game finished
1-1.
All in all a fair result for
a game both teams agreed was not a must win, it must have been good natured
because our referee Alan Smith said he thoroughly enjoyed his morning (a good
thing….I think).

Sunday 27th
January - Senior League Cup
Milburn 2 Green Phoenix Eagles 2
(HT 1-1)
Opening draw
in Round-Robin stage
With this competition it
was perfect for me to reward our loyal players that attend training and show
willingness week in week out. We played a straight 4-4-2 with George Potter
leading the line on his 18th birthday, we all signed a card
before the game and Wez even gave him the armband for the day (nice one
Wez). Soon after the kick off it was obvious that GPE’s league position did
not flatter the team that had turned up today. They played good flowing
football and got on with the game, they looked far more organised and
controlled than the last time we met.
We started well and our
regular players showed maturity looking after the reserve players that had come
up for this game.
They took the lead with a
thunderbolt of a shot and I would like to say against the run of play but I
cant, a well deserved first goal opened the scoring in this tight match.
Not long after Ashzarda
picked the ball up in midfield and poked a clever ball through to Campbell who
finished with the outside of his right foot, 1-1 going into the break.
At half time we seemed
relaxed and I made sure the team knew we had good options available if needed.
We stared to take control of
the game and looked good in patches playing the ball around but did not seem to
utilise our opportunities, they were young and hungry closing down very quickly
and breaking well. We still seem to be struggling to find our form after the
Christmas break but I’m we are not far away, our attitude is top notch and I’ve
never doubted our ability.
Midway through the second
half Campbell flicked the ball onto George Gillam who beat three players and
smashed the ball past the GPE keeper and we had the lead for the first time in
the match.
Our opponents equalised just
before the final whistle and the score finished 2-2.
All in all I am glad that
everyone got a game today and I am glad that the game was played with such good
spirit with good sportsmanship. Both teams deserved a point and the Ref even
told me he enjoyed it. The only down side of the day was that I had to go around
before the game and pick up dog s**t !!!!

Sunday 20th
January - Surrey Senior Cup
Royal Admiral 6
Milburn 2
(HT 2-1)
Out of the
Surrey Senior Cup
This was our first game
back after the Christmas break and did it show.
We fielded a fairly strong
team and should have got something from this game, from the off I knew they had
a good mature side that like playing football so if we wanted it we would have
to fight. The first ten or so we felt each other out looking for little openings
and testing the water, they had a good back four and a solid midfield so we had
to raise our game. Our first chance came when Clark cleared long and high,
Stutter latched on and lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box with a clever
little flick. We drew first blood but unknowingly like a red rag to a bull. Soon
after George Gillam unleashed a thunderbolt that whizzed past the top left of
the Royals goal and Charley Gillam open their back four up with some clever foot
work but could not get a shot off as he was closed down very quickly.
We then conceded two goals in
quick succession before the break and looked under pressure.
At the break we knew we were
being out muscled but with limited options available we had to get on with it.
Just after the break we
conceded another and looked jaded as the opposition took control of the game, we
seemed to be pinned into our own half for most of the match and could do little
about it. Two more goals went in and we knew the game was out of our control, we
played well in stages but were over powered and out played by our opponents.
They obviously train well and listen to each other, one thing I would like to
say about our side.
We pushed forward and Daniel
Lee burst into the box only to be brought down, up stepped Jimmy Stutter to
claim his second of the game. We conceded another just before the final whistle
which could not have come sooner if you ask me and the game finished there 6-2
and a very comfortable win for the home side.
All in all only a handful of
players can go away from this match with their heads held high knowing they gave
their all, the rest of the team gave about 65% due to fitness. But thank you all
because your effort was much better than the players that let you down all
together by not even turning up, good luck to Admiral Royal in both the league
and cup.

Sunday 9th
December - Surrey Senior Cup
Milburn 2 Ewell Park 1
(HT 2-0)
Into the last
16 in Surrey Senior Cup
I felt confident going into this game especially off the back of such a good win against Santos. As
the manager I knew I had to start the same eleven that had fought such a
dogged battle the week before. The unfortunate truth was that some of the
players let the group down, I understand that with the Hatton fight on so
late on Saturday night the players might be a bit hung over and jaded but I
never expected them not to turn up at all. Well done Wez and Jimmy, out all
night drinking and still ever present, what can I say…..hardcore as usual.
I had not spoken to Harry
Fox, Scott Dullaway and George Potter. Sam Tyler had the decency to let me know
before the game, all be it about an hour before kick off. We also had George
Gillam out injured and his brother Charley serving Queen and country. I am very
disappointed and have had not as much as a call from the other three, as from
Wednesday any players found to be uncommitted and non respondent can leave the
club and new players will be drafted in. Before kick off we had just nine first
team players and for a team in the position we are in I feel that it was a poor
show so well done to my regular and reliable players. Ashley Dangerfield and new
signing Ahmad Ashzarda stepped up to the plate and if not for them I am sure we
would of crashed out of this competition in our opening round, Just an indicator
on how stretched we were I was our only substitute.
The game got under way and
I had done my home work on the opposition and knew there would be little to no
threat on our goal, that’s not being disrespectful but realistic when you
consider their league form. Jimmy Stutter and Dave Curtis slotted into the back
four with Townsend and Lares either side of them. We played four in midfield
with Chamberlain and Lee taking the flanks with Ashzarda playing alongside Nanu
who played in the unfamiliar central midfield position. Dangerfield took his
place alongside Campbell leading the line and all eleven men fought for the
cause. Maybe we were missing key players and maybe replacement players are not
as gifted but if the missing players had the desire and commitment of those who
attended today then our group would be unbeatable.
We took the game to the
visitors and showed that no Milburn team of mine will lay down for anyone, our
opponents underestimated us from the start and a few of the lads heard their
players say “lets teach these kids a lesson”. Our first goal came around the
twenty minute mark when a Chamberlain throw found Campbell whose strength was
once again too much for his opponent and with a drop of the shoulder cut the
ball along the edge of the penalty area where Lee picked it up, knocked it past
one defender and slotted home neatly with a left foot strike. I may be over
critical on Daniel for obvious reasons and on many occasions told him he has to
prove himself more than anyone else but with six goals in eleven starts at just
sixteen I think he selects himself at this point in time, well done son.
Our second goal again was all
down to the pace and strength of Jon Campbell who burst through and brushed
aside the challenges from our opponents, rounded the keeper and slotted into the
far corner past the defender covering on the line. At this stage I knew their
heads had dropped but they had spirit so any complacency would let us down. At
the break I commended everyone for their commitment and desire to win this game,
I knew we would have a few tired legs and I knew I would have to make an
appearance at some stage but for now we stayed the same and came out for the
second half with one foot in the next round. In my opinion our senior players
set the bar high and our younger players did their utmost to emulate them, and
although the comments made before the game inspired us they were right our
senior players are only in their mid twenties.
The second half was a non event
until the Gaffer made his appearance and drastically raised the average age of
the team, Dangerfield made way and I slotted in up front. I would like to say
twenty years ago I would have had a hat trick but I should stick to the fact
that I was not much better then. The Ref indicated one minute of stoppage time
so everyone bombed on and like I have stated before “You must keep your shape at
all times”. With literally seconds on the clock they got a well deserved goal as
our team were seriously exposed at the back and the game finished 2-1.
All in all I must say I am very
proud of the players that showed up today and if not for the quality of the
committed players this club would be in the bottom half of the table and not
chasing three more trophies to add to the Lombard cup.

Sunday 2nd
December
Santos 0 Milburn 6
(HT 0-2)
A '10' Mark
for Stutter hat-trick
With all due respect
to our opponents I felt confident going into this game. After reading their
match report and how it would be a different game when they had all players
available I wanted to make a statement and show how hungry our group are.
I
made sure everyone knew what was at stake and everyone knew what was expected
by every individual. I changed the side to suit the players available and
went with a 4-3-3 formation putting Dave Curtis as the anchor in the centre
of the park allowing Jimmy Stutter, Jon Campbell and Daniel Lee the freedom
to interact at the top end of the field. With George Potter coming in for
the ever-present Scott Dullaway we had a young but very hungry back four.
Santos are a decent side and can play football,
with Kevin McGourty leading the line it’s obvious that they should play to their
strengths. The long ball game can be unattractive but Santos utilise it well
mixing good fluid football with route one and can hit on the break, my system
was set out to eliminate any threat. The game started and as
always I made sure the group could hear my instructions, our midfield started
quick and set the bar for the game, Jacob Nanu and Warren Chamberlain worked
very hard as the silk to Dave Curtis’s steel.
Our first goal came from a
long George Potter throw on the twenty minute mark. Stutter flicked the ball to
Campbell’s feet and a quick trademark turn and shot opened the scoring. The second goal came from
some stunning one touch football that saw a Jimmy Stutter shot from about
fifteen yards out parried into an advancing Dave Curtis who fired home from
close range.
At the break I commended
the defence who played beyond their years showing glimpses of brilliance closing
down anything that threatened our goal, the midfield and attack also seemed to
stroll through the half. My instructions were clear and as a unit we all knew we
had to solider on and put the game beyond the reach of the home side, no
changes.
The second half got under
way and the weather got progressively worse. We took the bull by the horns and a
long ball was flicked on by Lee to Campbell who controlled and laid a perfect
ball to Stutter who curled a first time shot past the Santos keeper. Our forth came soon after
when Lee played a quick one two with Stutter, after the return Lee dropped his
shoulder and ghosted past the on coming defender then slotted home with a left
foot drive into the top corner. Campbell then used his strength on the left wing
then cut the ball inside to Lee who in turn found Stutter on the edge of the
area and another first time strike doubled his tally and the score was 0-5.
At this stage I felt it
time to reward the loyalty of Ashley Dangerfield who had run the line for the
entire game, he replaced Chamberlain. Five minutes later I came
on for Dean Townsend and slotted straight in to the back four, and if not for
the other three we could have conceded as my pace was not up to par. After some very good fluid
football Lee Jr was scythed down about thirty yards out and even though I
screamed that I wanted to take it Stutter made it very clear that he was going
to have the honour, some choice word were muttered. One step and the ball
rocketed into the Santos net leaving the keeper no chance. Stutter had got his
hat trick and a well deserved one at that. It finished there and I must say our
defence was impeccable showing the group that they were every bit as important
as our strike force. Nanu, Campbell and Lee played some breathtaking football
along with Stutter, Chamberlain and Curtis who put in a dogged performance.
Tyler, Potter, Lares and Townsend have shown their desire to stay in the team,
we have four quality players to come back into the side and I can assure you
this, if we play like we did today I hope they are very very patient.
All in all on the day we played
as a unit and I would have backed us to beat anyone, and I mean anyone.

Sunday 25th
November
(report by Wez
Clark)
Milburn 5 Santos 2
(HT 2-1)
Campbell
double too good for Santos
With the gaffer working today, I was given the chance too get a win under my
belt. We were missing players yet again (you know who u lot are) and we started strong.
We
created chances and it wasn't long till Jimmy Stutter placed well into the Santos net 1-0
Milburn, and wasn't much longer after that when Dave Curtis
floated in a cross only for the keeper to watch it fly into the net 2-0
Milburn and the first goal for the club for Dave.
Why cant we defend properly, we say
this every week and it winds me up. A long ball over the top one bounce past our
defence and tucked into the bottom corner 2-1. Both teams created chances but only
for a double save from Wez Clark kept the score at 2-1 half time.
2nd half started and Santos had an early chance but missed thank
God. I made a
change ten minutes into the half with Daniel Lee making way for Jon Campbell and he
sure made an entrance by scoring within 5 minutes with a cool finish. 3-1
Milburn. They didn't know what hit them and Jon was a real threat upfront and took his tally
to 2 after slotting home for 4-1. Santos never once gave up especially when they
pulled another back to 4-2. It should've been 4-3 but a fine one on one save from
Wez Clark kept it 4-2. Scott went off injured so I brought Jacob Nanu on who played
right back, Geo was ever dangerous when he played a one two with his brother
Charley and then hit well taken shot; bang 5-2 Milburn. Good goal Geo and about
time. Full time and I must say to the team great attitude and well played. Thank
you too Kurt for running the line.

Sunday 18th
November
Milburn 1 Thornton Rovers 0
(HT 0-0)
Stutter strike settles Super
Sunday clash
Only three points would do if we
had any chance of accomplishing anything in this campaign.
We had a few last minute changes
but the team we put out was a strong one. Wez donned the gloves in Fishers
absence once again and what a game he had. Rovers play good attacking football
and over the years I have watched them it was easy for me to pick out what I
would call key players, players I wanted us to keep a close eye on. This all
went out of the window as soon as the starting whistle was blown, with the wind
blowing and the drizzly rain setting in the scene was set for an all out battle.
Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t
handbags and tantrums but it was a good clean physical show of what the game
should be. It had its moments but with Jimmy marshalling the game, football was
top of the agenda. We had to dig deep and so did they, plenty of chances were
had but I felt unlucky to go in at half time with the scores tied at 0-0.
The second half opened up with
George Gillam going close for us and Joel Allen hitting the wood work for
Rovers. Some good one touch passing saw Dave Curtis cleverly finding Jimmy
Stutter on the edge of the box and with a fierce shot Stutter put Milburn ahead
with his sixteenth goal of the season,1-0.
I’d like to say we cruised to
victory from this point but in all honesty if not for the two keepers the game
could of any another day ended six or seven all. Three points well earned and a
lesson for anyone who gets complacent, all in all I was pleased with the
character of the side and very pleased with one or two individuals in
particular, next week Santos for yet another tough test.

Sunday 11th
November
Milburn 7 Kurdish United 3
(HT 5-2)
Captain
Fantastic fires 4 first half goals
I knew there would be plenty to
write about going into this game, let’s say the opposition are an interesting
bunch. Wez got his chance up front and soon after kick off justified my
decision with a quick goal pouncing on the loose ball after a Jimmy Stutter
shot. I don’t know how many times I have emphasized the importance of
following up just in case the keeper spills the shot,1-0.
We found ourselves two up after a
Wez Clark cross found Daniel Lee at the back post, a spectacular looping header
eluded the keeper and found the far top corner, 2-0. Clark was back on the score sheet
on the ten minute mark with a thunderous shot into the bottom corner that the
keeper struggled to deal with,3-0. Clark then got a well deserved hat
trick when Stutter slotted him through to slip the ball past the keeper from
about 10 yards out, 4-0. Kurdish pulled a goal back but
watched in amazement as Clark met a cross from the right hand side and executed
a scissor kick with perfection that found United’s top corner, four goals for
our skipper inside the twenty minute mark, 5-1. Just before the break United
pulled another one back and I must say looked very dangerous going forward, the
only downside to their game is that they cannot defend.
At the break we had to settle
things down a bit as United had kicked lumps out of my men, they play the
innocent card very well and you can see why some referees would buy it. Wez had done his job up front and
made his way into the back four giving George Potter a chance to show what he
can do leading the pack, Nanu replaced Lee and Dullaway replaced Townsend. Potter met a Dave Curtis free
kick with a bullet header that gave the United keeper no chance, three goals in
four starts for young George Potter but can he score with his feet? Scotty sat on the bench for the
first half because he had missed training and obviously felt he had a point to
prove when he dribbled the ball from left back around three United players and
fired his shot across the keeper into the top right hand corner, 7-2.
Now the controversial bit, before
the game I saw Fish talking to one of the opposition who he latter told me was
his barber. United attacked and fired an optimistic shot from around thirty
yards out, we all watched in amazement as the ball seemed to knock the ripped
six times a week in the gym Fish clean off his feet. That’s not the amazing bit,
he then pushed the ball into his own net, got up and I’m sure I saw him wink at
the Kurdish bench……..mmmmmmmm free haircut this week Fish.
All in all a good performance and
some good goals by both teams, things we can learn from this game are, always
continue your runs into the box even after one of your team mates has had a shot
on goal, you never know. Secondly if the opposition kick you consistently this
means you are a threat and you should consider it a compliment and not lose your
cool when you are obviously out classing you opponent. Finally if someone calls
you names let it fall on deaf ears as this is the lowest form of abuse anyone
can stoop to. What ever colour race or creed you may be the important things are
what your team mates and friends think of you, what you can do for the team and
most importantly the self respect to pity people that think name calling can
affect you.

Sunday 4th
November
Milburn 4 Surrey Cricketers 0
(HT 4-0)
Milburn back
to winning ways
After the disappointment
last week it was time we got it back together and showed everyone what we are
about. I stayed loyal to the
players that had turned up to training and in the opening part of the match we
showed strength and determination.
It was not long before we found ourselves 1-0
up with a well worked Jimmy Stutter goal. George Gillam pushed up from full back
and slotted the ball through to Warren Chamberlain who cut inside and cleverly
dribbled the ball past two or three of the Cricketers defenders and passed to
Stutter to do the rest. Not long after Jimmy
Stutter cut the Cricketers back four to shreds with a ball out toward our right
wing where Daniel Lee took it to the by-line then cut in breezing past four
defenders before coolly slotting past the Cricketers keeper. Our third goal came from a
Jimmy Stutter cross that was met by a George Potter header. Jimmy Stutter himself made
it four when a defensive error gifted him the chance to slot into an open net,
4-0 leading into the break.
Half time was interesting
as I had refereed the first half, all I made clear was that we should continue
to play the football we had in the first half but cut out the banter. We had
been drawn into a slanging match with the opposition and it was getting to one
or two of my men. Nobody likes to lose but our opposition seemed to whinge for
fun, every tackle every decision and every opportunity possible I faced someone
moaning about something even as far as how much air was in the match ball.
Jimmy marshalled the
second half and the scoreline stayed the same which gave me the opportunity to
use all my subs including Ashley Dangerfield who was rewarded for his loyalty
and determination to stay with the fantastic group of players we have at the
club, well done Ash.
All in all a well deserved win
and let that be a lesson for anyone that thinks my team is a walk over.

Sunday 28th
October (report
by Wez Clark)
Thornton Rovers 3
Milburn 1
(HT 1-1)
Milburn suffer
1st League loss
With all the hype going into this game, seeing as last time half our team
played Rovers they got spanked 5-0 revenge should be on the cards, due to the
fact that 4 players dropped out 2 hours before the game meant it gave Harry Fox a chance too shine in midfield and
Daniel Lee upfront.
The weather was bad
rain wind really didn't really help the start off the game but we started OK.
We
was showing we was the better team by putting pressure on the Rovers goal
making the defence work, Mark Pemberton pulled two top saves one from Jimmy
Stutter who hit a crisp volley only for Mark to tip over the bar, even with
all the pressure we still let the Rovers through too attack our goal, they hit
a feeble shot only too be majorly deflected off Wez Clark's leg into the
Milburn goal sending George Gillham the wrong way 1-0 rovers. We knew they
never deserved this so we pilled the pressure on again and won a corner which
was whipped in by Daniel Lee and was met by Wez Clark too volley home from 6
yards out 1-1 back on level terms. We created more chances but missed more
chances, we started passing the ball about nicely and neat but it was a little
too late cause the whistle blew for half time.
2nd half started slow for us, we gave the ball away in silly places, we looked
real bad then 10mins into the half Rovers had a corner which was headed
cleared only to hit a Milburn player and bounce to Andy Vince who blasted
home from 4 yards, 2-1 rovers another gifted goal, we got back into the game
and was looking good, we made a change Kurt came off for our new signing Tyler
who went centre back and Wez Clark went up front and Daniel Lee went right
midfield where he was a menace. Tyler fitted in well and looked good, as the
half went on we was getting annoyed but 12 mins from the end Daniel Lee
broke through the rovers defence only too be brought down in the box,,,
penalty.... up stepped Stutter and the outstretched Mark Pemberton to save it,
gutted as we dwelled on the missed penalty rovers took advantage on a poor
back pass to go round the keeper and tapped in but it was cleared off the
line, cause the ref see the defender who cleared it off the line touch the net
he gave the goal, when he gave the goal he was on the half way line how could
he see from there, 3-1 Rovers that's how it finished.

Sunday 21st
October
Kurdish United 3
Milburn 4
(HT 1-2)
Never a dull
game with Kurdish
With the Ref not turning
up I stepped forward and volunteered to do it as the game was close to being
called off. With the opposition a bit cagey about letting me Ref we finally
got the game under way and to my surprise Kurdish looked comfortable and
organised with a good attitude and some top class amateur dramatics.
We took the bull by the
horns and attacked like a team on a mission with Ben and Wez on the sideline
organising the pack. I let a few things go and tried to be as fair as I could
although both teams said I was brilliant and a cheat all in one breath, John and
Alan you can keep the job. Daniel Lee broke down the
right and burst into the box only for the Kurdish left back to hack him down for
a blatant penalty, Daniel stepped up and coolly converted to put Milburn in the
driving seat, 1-0.
We gave George Potter a
chance up front and he did not disappoint scoring a bullet header from close
range off of a Daniel Lee cross, 2-0 with only twenty minutes on the clock. Kurdish still pushed
forward and looked dangerous when doing so. They beat the offside trap and their
centre forward went through one on one, he knocked the ball one way then
promptly collided with our keeper. In my eyes this is a penalty so I asked the
advice of my linesman and with him agreeing with me I gave the spot kick, at
this stage the Kurdish players surrounded me demanding the keeper be sent off so
I reminded them of the earlier incident involving the left back and that he had
been the last man, they disbanded very quickly. The spot kick was taken and the
deficit was reduced, 2-1 and halftime followed very soon after.
I stayed out of our team
talk and took the very lonely position at the centre spot. I took the moment in
and looked over at both camps, I did not understand the language in one camp and
cringed at the language in the other. Our two goalscorers made way for club
captain Wez Clark and top scorer Jimmy Stutter. The second half started and much
of the same with plenty of miss hit passes and even more mistimed challenges. I
think it was about four minutes before Clark fired a ferocious first time shot
past a statuesque Kurdish goalkeeper, 3-1 and we looked very strong. Kurdish
pulled one back with a spectacular free kick from well outside the box only for
Warren Chamberlain to extend our lead with a persistent run and finish, 4-2.
With the game almost over Kurdish got a late consolation goal but by that stage
the game was well won.
All in all I felt both sides had chances and
both sides dramatised 80% of any challenge made. A fine display from Captain
Dave Curtis and a cracking goal for late arrival Clark. If we want to win this
league we must perform better and show a little more dedication.

Sunday 14th
October - Sunday Carlsberg FA Cup 1st Round
Quested 3
Milburn 2
(HT 2-1)
Milburn's
dream ends
We arrived at Chatham FC
and knew we would be playing a decent side. A Quested club official approached
me and welcomed us to the ground, the facilities were second to none and the
opposition were very accommodating.
We had plenty of time to talk through the
job at hand and the players seemed to be in the right frame of mind to cope
with the situation, my only trouble spot was on the right hand side where I
have two very young and very raw players. Curt Lares and my son Daniel Lee
have massive potential and a great attitude, both players turn up to training
week in week out and with the right guidance could go a long way. Both players
have a lot of positive points but need to work on one or two things that could
improve the way they play the game but that will come with experience.
I decided to play a system
that suited the players available with two wingers and two defending midfielders
playing with one forward and a player covering the area behind the lone striker. As the match got under way
I felt we held our own against very good opposition. Quested took the lead after
about 15 minutes with a well worked goal and heads went down. Quested had a very
good central midfielder and two or three other talented players that showed
confidence and cool heads. Not long after we found ourselves 2-0 down, my system
was not working so we had to revert to the good old 4-4-2 formation.
After the change we got
back into the game and looked good value for money, we pushed on and came close
on a couple of occasions. The ball was well worked down the left hand side with
both Stutter and Chamberlain involved before the ball broke to Charley Gillam on
the edge of the box who then unleashed one of the best shots I have ever seen,
half volley into the top corner. With the score at 2-1 I
felt we could get back into this game, the half time whistle went and a well
deserved break for all involved.
I took this opportunity to
tell the players that I was proud no matter the outcome and if they wanted to
win then the game was in only the hands of the eleven that took the field for
the second half. After about ten minutes
the obvious change was Lares for Lee and my change proved to be just as Lares
turned on a sixpence and scored from the edge of the box with his first touch,
2-2 and game on.
The game was very well
balanced with both sides going close, both sides finished the game looking jaded
but with five minutes still to play Quested broke down the left and scored,
Milburn’s FA cup dream was over but I was very proud of the character and
passion we showed and I would like to thank Quested for a very good day out,
shame the scoreline did not favour us.
All in all we learnt a lot from this adventure,
most valuable lesson learnt was DON’T BUY ANYTHING FROM A MOTORWAY SERVICE
STATION !!!!!

Sunday 30th
September
Green Phoenix Eagles 1
Milburn 4
(HT 0-3)
Strong 1st
half sets up win!!
I wanted to start with the
same starting eleven in the same system as we played in the FA cup, two
midfielders sitting deep and George Gillam dropping short of the front line.
From kick off I felt confident and it was not long before Charley Gillam opened
the scoring from a pin point Ssebwese corner that he met at the back post to
power his header past the Eagles keeper. We played some decent football and
seemed to adapt to the new found system well, Jimmy Stutter made it two with a
well crafted move that he finished off by stroking the ball past the Eagles
keeper, and at just twenty he shows confidence and class beyond his years, well done. A long ball from the back
found Stutter who flicked it on to Charley Gillam who had burst through from
midfield and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box, a well taken goal by
any standard to make it 3-0 going into the break.
We had taken some abuse
and watched the opposition argue amongst themselves so I knew we had been doing
our job. It was down to me to tell the players to not get involved and to
continue to play the way we had, two changes at half time, Daniel Lee and Warren
Chamberlain made way for Jacob Nanu and Kurt Lares respectively. Eagles pushed
on and the Ref awarded them a penalty when one of their forwards was hacked down
in the box, Clark pulled off an excellent save keeping the score at 3-0, I would
like to say it was the only save he had to make during the game but three or
four classy saves previous to this had kept the score line in our favour.
With the game in the bag
we started to move the ball around and change our shape slightly, Charley Gillam
pushed on to get the hat trick he deserved along with Nanu hitting the flank
like roadrunner. A deflected shot found Gillam at the back post, his header
rolled toward the goal marshalled by Jimmy Stutter who I though was going to
nick it on the line but gentleman Jim let it roll over the line for Charley
Gillam to claim his first hat trick in Milburn’s colours. At this stage gaps
were appearing all over the park as everyone wanted to get in on the scoring
action, this proved to be disastrous as Eagles broke the off side trap and
scored past an exposed Clark in the Milburn goal, lesson learnt DON’T PLAY THE
FLAG, PLAY THE WHISTLE.
1-4 and a fair result in
my opinion, all in all I’m sure Eagles will be happy to of conceded just four goals. Next week we are holding
an intense training session and everyone who wants to be involved in the FA cup
tie against Quested I’m sure will attend, new signing George Potter made his
debut for Ssebwese when he came on in the second half and slotted in very well.
We now have competition for places with cover in every position, DON’T GET
COMPLACENT.
Well done to Wez for not getting lobbed this week !!

Sunday 23rd

Lashings 2
Milburn 3
(HT 2-1)
FA Cup
preliminary triumph ... eventually!!
All the way to Maidstone
for our first FA cup game. We changed the system to suit the players available
and had plenty of back up on the bench. The game started at a pace
and we took time to find our feet.
Daniel Lee burst into the box only to be
brought down for the Ref to award us an early penalty, Jimmy Stutter picked the
ball up and confidently placed it on the spot. On any occasion Jimmy is the
coolest head under pressure and he took the penalty well only to see it hit the
post, well taken but not on target. Shortly after Dave Curtis
tried to control the ball only for the Lashings forward to steel it and slot
home the easiest chance he will have all season, 1-0 Lashings. Two minutes later
we attacked down the left flank and Chamberlain tried to whip a ball in forcing
the Lashings full back to handle it in his own penalty area, our second penalty.
I hoped Stutter would have the confidence to try again from the spot and he did
coolly converting to draw the game level. I said before the game that men behind
the ball when defending would make it hard for anyone to score against us and I
expected nothing less than a freak shot to be the only thing that would
penetrate our defence, bring on the freak goal. Our back four seemed slow to
close the attack down and the result was a twenty five yard optimistic strike
thundering into our top corner leaving big Wez no chance at all. After a mistimed tackle
Dave Curtis went into the book, moments later Curtis got his marching orders for
kicking the ball away and although harsh I cannot disagree with the Ref as the
rules are the rules.
With only twenty six
minutes on the clock I was forced into my first change. Harry Fox came on and
slotted into the back four and Daniel Lee made way, I pushed George Gillam out
on the right and went 4-4-1 with Big Jim leading the pack. The lashings full
back looked relived to see the back of Daniel as he hade been put through his
paces by our talented right winger. We started to look good and looked even
better when Lashings went down to ten men when their centre back limped off
injured. Half time and a well needed break, I tried to calm the boys down and
explain where we could improve and what we needed to do to win this game.
The majority of the second
half I felt we had control although a few half chances squandered by the
opposition were well received in our dugout, not so well received were the
chances we wasted. George Gillam made way for Jacob Nanu in a straight swap and
an excellent bit of skill along with a ferocious shot followed, well done Jacob.
We turned it up a gear pushing Lashings back, Louie Ssebwese and Charley Gillam
marshalled the midfield and Chamberlain, Stutter and Nanu caused problems for
their defenders. Dullaway, Les Gillam along with Fox and Townsend held the back
line with a fearless display and we pushed for a second goal. Stutter and
Chamberlain linked up well with some clever one touch passing resulting in
Chamberlain getting us a well deserved second goal in the seventy fifth minute,
2-2 and game on.
We pushed on and our
fitness levels proved to be too much for a jaded Lashings team, an awesome power
header by Charley Gillam put Stutter clean through and believe me Jim don’t miss
these, 3-2 with ten to go.The last ten I felt
confident and we played some good football pushing them back and attacking with
pace, Wez Clark finished off an excellent display with a trio of top class
saves, the whistle blew and we were through to the next round.
All in all a fair result
against a well balanced team that showed sportsmanship and character. The
officials also had a good game and I hope we were a fair team to oversee, no
animosity and no real incident to report on. Players were asked to play in
unfamiliar positions and some were asked to sacrifice themselves for the team,
not one decision I made was questioned and not one player failed to adapt to the
changes, well done to all.

Surrey Cricketers 2
Milburn 2
(HT 1-1)
Milburn open
League season with a point!!
The first league game of
the campaign and we fielded a skeleton team, Louie Ssebwese and Charley Gillam
both absent with Jon Campbell who has now joined up with Waddon Community.
The
game took its time getting going and both teams looked a couple of players
short, Billy Rivers started up front for them and although aged seventy four
looked dangerous as a marksman never loses his touch. Cricketers went one up and
deserved the lead with some persistent play, we were lucky not to be two down
before Jimmy Stutter pulled one back for us before the break.
Anthony Williams came off
at half time, George Gillam dropped back into the midfield while Jacob Nanu took
Jimmy’s side in the front line. Kurt Lares took his chance replacing Williams by
exposing the cricketers full back and constantly causing him trouble, Jimmy and
Jacob were unlucky not to of had a hat trick each with more squandered chances
than I have ever seen us have in one game. Cricketers scored a well taken second
before Stutter converted from the spot to tie the game, 2-2 and our first draw.
All in all I must say for
the sides we put out it was an enjoyable match with both teams happy for a
point, the next game will be very interesting if we are both at full strength
and a game I look forward to.

Sunday 9th

Milburn 3 Golden Lion 1
(HT 2-0)
LIC Champions
& first silverware for Milburn
Any game against our old
adversaries we look forward to and this one would be no different. It seemed very low key for
a cup final although both sides had an abundance of talent at hand.
We felt each
other out for the first five or so minutes and I felt we had the lions share,
pardon the pun. We looked good and played some really attractive football
against the best team we had faced in this competition. They held out until
Moore and Stutter put us two up respectively in quick succession around the
twenty minute mark. They had some key players missing but so did we and chances
were had by both teams. Half time came and I had
my chance to cool the lads down, although we are now best of enemies both of us
hate to lose.
The second half started with pace and we pushed on time after time
with our forwards causing them problems, Jack Vass held their back four together
with a superb man marking display on Jon Campbell while Fennessy caused us
problems with quick feet. When they attacked us I felt we held together very
well and showed unity from front to back, Lion also played the game with a
settled unit and matched us man for man. I felt we had sixty percent of play but
I’m sure Neil would say the same although we did have slightly more chances. Jimmy Stutter put us three
up and I felt the game was in the bag. Terry Fennessy got a consolation goal but
it was not enough, 3-1 and Milburn are the LIC champions.
People will say it’s
only the LIC trophy but you were all in it to win it so that sort of talk does
not bother me in the slightest. The new Milburn has started well and with six
straight wins, four games without a booking, 29 goals scored and 8 goals
conceded and I am very happy. All in all I think we need
to strengthen in certain positions but I’m sure with the quality we have we can
do well this season, one down and four to go.

Sunday 2nd

Milburn 9 Golden Lion II 0
(HT 4-0)
Next stop Cup Final showdown with
Golden Lion
Well here we are on our way to Milburn’s
first ever cup final, five wins out of five and more clean sheets than a
Chinese laundry. I spoke to my assistants in the week and we decided to reward
some of the reserves with a first team run out, up came Dean and Perry Walker
with Ashley Dangerfield to join Kurt Lares who has nailed down a first team
place over the last couple of weeks.
The Lion started well and to be fair were
unlucky not to capitalise on the pressure they put on us early on, they played
the ball around and caused us some problems with some well worked moves. We took
the game by the scruff of the neck and were rewarded when Warren Chamberlain
broke through and started the scoring for us. As I said before we had four first
team players out and the disadvantage of me playing up front but it was me that
won us the penalty for the second goal. As the ball came to me in the area I
controlled it and showed some amazing agility turning on a sixpence, and no Wez
I was not auditioning for Riverdance. I turned the defender inside out and he
had no option but to scythe me down, some might say I went down easier than a
Polish prostitute but I was nether the less brought down. Charley Gillam stepped
up and easily converted the spot kick to make it 2-0 to us. Jon Campbell opened
his account for the day twice before half time to make it 4-0 Milburn.
Another mild half time team talk and the
boys were ready for the second half, Dean Walker replaced me up front and Ashley
Dangerfield replaced Warren Chamberlain on the left hand side. Shortly after the
restart Kurt Lares scored to start us on our way again, Anthony Williams and
Kurt Lares worked the right hand side brilliantly with some breathtaking
football and linked up like they had been playing together for years. Dean
Walker up from the reserves opened his account shortly after, Jon Campbell
notched his hat trick on about 60 minutes then Dean Walker scored his second to
make it 8-0. Jon Campbell got his fourth with just minutes left on the clock and
drew another step closer to the golden boot. 9-0 and the game was over, Lion
played some decent football in patches and with a few more players could be a
good side. Joe Clayton impressed me with cool head under pressure.
We look now to next week and hope that everyone enjoys what should be a very
interesting match.

Sunday 26th

Milburn 7 North Kent Rangers 1
(HT 4-0)
Lack of oxygen and a swollen ankle for
the Gaffer in his first start for Milburn
With no disrespect to our opponents I
felt that if I was going to play then this is the game for me. I filled in at
right back and changed the pattern of play pushing our outside midfielders
further forward knowing that the skill and pace would be too much for NK
Rangers.
We knew from the start that we could score goals against this team
and if not for their keeper we would have been well into double figures (at
one stage I wanted him drug tested). Our first goal came on the twenty minute
mark with some excellent work from the usual suspects, JC and Warren putting
Jimmy through to do what he does best. Moments later Stutter found his way
through again to get his and our second in a matter of minutes. Warren
Chamberlain notched up his second goal for Milburn with a solid strike that
gave the keeper no chance, 3-0 Milburn. Jon Campbell opened his account just
before half time, we went in 4-0 up so the team talk was a mild one. As I was
playing Ben took the team talk, what he said was enough as we had played well
throughout the first half and everyone was doing a job.
JC quickly got his
second shortly after the restart and ten minutes later I made way with Louie
for Anthony Williams and Kurt Lares. A few moments later George Gillam made
way for Louie Ssebwese who came on and slotted in at right back. NK Rangers
pulled one back as Wez cot caught cold with the only thing he had to do all
game, I think the shock of them getting into our half surprised him. The
scoring continued when the injured Jimmy Stutter completed his hat trick. The
ever impressive Dave Curtis limped off with a hamstring injury and Stutter
filled in at the back, this was my chance as I took the reins up front. At
this stage I had turned my ankle and was breathing from the wrong place but I
held out and even set Kurt up for his first goal in Milburn colours, 7-1 and
there it finished. All in all I felt this game was a mismatch but NK Rangers
never lost their spirit and were a joy to play against, this was a good
spirited game with no real incidents to mar, could it be we are turning the
corner???

Sunday 19th

Milburn 2 The Flames 0
(HT 0-0)
With everyone looking at us for the
wrong reasons it was time to show people that we are a good football team.
We started the game a bit stretched as
we had key players missing, this allowed others in the club to show me what
they have got. Les Gillam played up front and we brought Kurt Lares up from
the reserves after hearing some good reports. Before we kicked off I spoke to
the players and made it clear that we had no room for errors as all eyes were
on us and we had got people talking about us for the wrong reasons. With two
sending off’s in two weeks an outsider would be thinking that we were a team
of thugs and bullied our way through games, although I can understand if
people did think this but would have to disagree. We have been very
unfortunate with the situations at hand and although I agree with the
decisions the situations was somehow unsympathetic as in both games, our
players were subject to some seriously mistimed tackles that seemed to go
unnoticed by our match day officials.
But today was different and we started
like a team with something to prove. With the bonus of new signing Dave Curtis
from Mitsubishi starting and dropping into the back four we looked solid. The
first half came and went with a hatful of chances for our lads but no
breakthrough. The Flames never looked like scoring with Dullaway and Curtis
like a brick wall at the back until about a minute before half time when their
striker beat the offside trap and went through one on one with our skipper,
needless to say Wez never let us down, (after being lobbed on his line last
week he daren’t). at the break I commended the players on all fronts and told
them to go and finish the job, they knew nothing less than victory would be
good enough.
Our breakthrough came when Stutter broke
down the line and whipped the ball into the Flames box, the defender beat Les
Gillam to the ball but could only put it into his own net. With the score in
our favour we pushed on and at stages our football was almost machine like
with solid performances all over the park. Our second goal was a moment of
genius from our number ten. After turning on the edge of the box he controlled
and fired his shot into the top corner. Kurt Lares came on and done well with
the rest of the team looking sharp in the last quarter of the match, all in
all our performance was faultless with some breathtaking passing. Our first
clean sheet and not one booking, I wonder what will be the subject of
conversation this week????

Lombard Phoenix 2 Milburn 3
(HT 2-2)
Another entertaining game
and another victory. Beating the hosts was as sweet as it gets although another
mild mannered referee who seemed to be bullied around by our opposition
resulting in Milburn losing another player for the duration of the tournament
marred our victory.
The game started
cautiously as would be expected, both sides seemed cagey and from what I could
see our opposition were weaker than I had anticipated. Some good build up play
saw David Cele dart into the box early on only to go over as if he had been shot
by a sniper, was the referee fooled? The answer YES. Rich Crozier converted from
the spot, 1-0 Lombard.
Justice was done shortly
after when the ever impressive Charley Gillam split the entire Lombard team in
two with a pin point perfect ball for Jon Campbell to slot past the Lombard
keeper,1-1 and Lombard were still chasing shadows while we waiting for them to
re-start the game. A few moments later JC and Jimmy Stutter along with Warren
Chamberlain tore Lombard to shreds with some amazing one touch passing allowing
Jimmy Stutter to claim his second goal in as many starts for his new team.2-1
Milburn.
With my side firmly in
control we raged Lombard around like a Lion toying with its prey, pushing the
ball around at almost a canter. Another dive, thankfully outside the box this
time allowed Lombard to level the score with what can only be described as a
freak goal. Wez and the defence had everything covered only for a miss hit cross
to somehow find the net, against the run of play Lombard were back in it, 2-2.
Again Milburn pushed the
ball around as Lombard seemed to be out of their league. Now I can see that this
may be very frustrating but what Lombard’s so called captain done next was
horrific by any standards. Charley Gillam as a player has been nothing but fair
for the six or so years I have seen him play contrary to any other opinion you
may hear went in to a tackle that he won and the result of this was a frustrated
Lombard captain purposely stamping down on him and from the angle I saw it, it
was on his face. Luckily for Charley the studs of the other player missed his
face but left a twelve inch gash across his arm and back putting him out of work
for the next three days. I understand that the referees have been asked to keep
their cards in their pockets but surly behaviour like this must be dealt with
severely. Gary Reed saw the incident from the angle I saw it from and reacted by
running onto the pitch, I followed to pacify the situation as my players reacted
and rightly so to this cowardly challenge. Gary received a straight red card,
the referee claimed he saw the incident and saw nothing wrong but booked the
Lombard captain anyway. If the challenge was deemed legitimate why did the
referee show him the yellow card???
At the break I could see
my players were riled and it was my job to appease the situation, as a manager I
always set a good example and I always promote football rather than the kick
them because they are too good policy we have had to deal with from the lesser
sides we have played.
The second half started
and we seemed comfortably in control with JC and Jimmy Stutter going close on
numerous occasions but the deadlock was broken when Jon Campbell fired a shot
that hit the post and went in, 3-2 Milburn.
Again I will
reiterate my thoughts, our opposition seem to be hell bent on winding us up when
they know they have no chance of competing and that is sad, my boys play good
football and I will admit at times we are physical but that is the mentality of
champions and champions we will be.

Sunday 5th
August
Milburn 5 Bromley Flamengo 4
(HT 3-0)
The
Gaffer's report ..
A winning start for the new Milburn team
and some excellent debut performances in the blistering sunshine. We
started well with both ability and organisation, our opponents fielded
some good players that I know and some fair players I had never seen
before. It became apparent within the first ten minutes who was in
control of this match and Warren Chamberlain opened the scoring
justifying the Gaffers decision to start him with a superb solo
effort, 1-0 Milburn.
Not long after it was business as usual for Jon Campbell our big
number 9 who run their back four ragged scoring two well taken goals
before half time. 3-0 and cruising going into the break.
The talk at half time was not one of my usual, the players were
instructed to pace themselves and not over do it in the midday sun. I
never felt threatened at all so nice and mellow from me. Veteran full
back Gerald Etheridge made way after an excellent first half
performance, Chamberlain dropped to left back and Daniel Lee JR came
on to play up the left flank. My idea was to put on one of our younger
faster players to attack down their weak side and pin them in, the
plan was blown out of the water just after the restart when Jacob Nanu
lost control and kicked out at one of the Flamengo players. Anyone who
has played for me will know I do not and will not tolerate that sort
of behaviour in my teams and I will stand by the Referees decision as
she had no choice but to send him off, but I will defend Jacob this
time as he has played for me for a long time and this is completely
out of character. I know the tournament organiser has told the
officials to keep bookings to a minimum but this is what has cost me
one of my most valuable players. If the official on the day had not
been given this instruction then I feel that two or three of their
players would have walked for various offences from kicking and
holding my players to at least seven handballs that I counted. After
the sending off Flamengo put the pressure on and scored to pull it
back to 3-1, Daniel Lee put Milburn back in the driving seat with a
well taken goal slotting it past a deflated Flamengo keeper and an
excellent celebration followed, 4-1 Milburn.
Louie Ssebwese limped off and was replaced by Gary Read, our boys
became more and more sluggish as the sun took its toll on us. Flamengo
pulled two sloppy goals back only for the ever present Jimmy Stutter
to kill the game with one of his trade mark finishes as Flamengo put a
late consolation goal past a dishevelled Milburn back four, 5-4
Milburn.
In reflection my thoughts are these. Ms Casandra McKoy our referee
will be the first to tell anyone that she was verbally abused on more
than one occasion by a number of the Flamengo players, my Milburn
players seemed to be getting kicked all over the park and with ten men
we still looked the better team. We played attractive and entertaining
football and I feel my boys done me proud, as for Bromley Flamengo
what can I say. It seemed all their captain had in his locker was
mistimed tackles and idiotic comments, this must be the first time
they haven’t bullied their opponents and it showed, they looked an
average team with some half decent players in but in my opinion they
would struggle in the Croydon league. Colossal performances from Kevin
Daylrymple and Charley Gillam showed that Flamengo were way out of
their depth. Next week we play Lombard Phoenix in what should be an
interesting encounter so watch this space.
